Sunday updates

Ajudei-a a destapá-las, dei-lhe a mão e fui-lhe fazendo perguntas.

Tânia’s parents were the first visitors of the day. She was resting and slept the whole time they were there. She's still very responsive. Doctors and nurses told her mother that the weaning off medication is going smoothly. She’s not taking the same medication as before and she’s recovering very well. There are daily improvements.

In the afternoon, the visits were me, her boyfriend and his parents. Her boyfriend was first. He talked to her and found her much better. As she keeps trying to talk through gestures, he fears not being able to understand. Tânia keeps gesturing something, but none of us knows for sure what she wants to say. Maybe she wants pen and paper, maybe she wants something else and we don't know.

Then, it was her boyfriend’s mother visit. She talked to Tânia and held her hand. Cláudio’s mother was very moved with her frailty. Cláudio’s father was next and also held her hand and talked to her with lots of tenderness.

My turn, at last. I was waiting anxiously outside because I was 4th and she can only have 3 visitors, but she’s doing well and they let me in. As soon as I got to her side, it felt so relieved. A couple of days had passed since my last visit and she looks so much better. She’s not swollen and has again that cute little face we all know and love. Her hands move exactly as I remembered them moving around when she was talking before. It really is our Tânia.

She was covered and I touched her face, told her who I was and asked if she was sleeping or if she wanted me to talk to her. Immediately, she moved her hands around under the sheet. I moved the sheet back, held her hand and asked her if she wanted me to tell her what's going on with her. She gestured no and then I asked her if she wanted me to talk about her friends, and she nodded yes. I told her about people asking how she is, about the blog's posts, about the BC forum, about flickr and all the emails, phone calls and best wishes of all who keep her in their thoughts around the world. She nodded yes or no to my questions and I asked her if she wanted to know names and what people said. I didn’t understand her answer and asked her to squeeze my hand if it was yes. It was sooooo good to feel her squeezing my hand!

I talked about a lot of people and she was always nodding. I remember talking about Marcenda and Aquina and she was so happy when she finally understood what blog I was talking about. I also remember talking about Anamae, Bikovska, Papalagui, Lígia, PA, Kizmiaz, H2Omem, Árvores, PGV and more that I can’t recall now. But I also talked about Ataner and then her response was much more intense: she tried to talk, pointed to the tubes and her chest. She wanted to talk or some paper and I told she still can't do any of that. I talked more about Ataner and she squeezed my hand even more and I almost burst into tears. I told her about the emails and phone calls between me and Ataner, about the kisses Ataner sent her and much more I can't recall now. Tânia was so happy! She really loves Ataner very very much.

Then, I told her I would be back on Monday. Due to the teacher's strike, I'll try to stay with her more time. I asked her if she wanted me to come and she said yes with such a good squeeze. When it was time for me to leave, I asked her if she wanted me to call Cláudio again. I kissed her hand, wished her a good night and told her it was so good to feel her hand squeezing while we talk to her. She pulled my hand to her and squeezed as if she didn’t want to let go. Again, I almost burst into tears.

Cláudio went in again and stayed beside her until the nurses told him he had to leave.

Kisses for Tânia

  1. Thank you for these updates, and the English translations! I would be lost if they weren't translated.

I am so glad she is getting stronger! I know it will be frustrating until she can communicate. I hope it won't be much longer.

I'm still praying for a new heart!
